What We're Looking Forward to This Spring in the North Country

Although the winter season tends to linger in the North Country, we embrace the cool temperatures and look forward to longer sunshine-filled days. As residents of the North Country, our team at North Country Savings Bank takes pride in what our region has to offer in every season. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure or want to discover something new-to-you in your neighborhood, make the most of the spring season in northern New York.

Sugar Shacks

As the snow melts and the outdoor landscape begins to thaw and refreeze on occasional colder nights, maple sugar producers across the North Country offer a sweet look into New York State pure maple syrup. With treats like maple sugar candies and maple cream to more savory items like maple roasted nuts and maple dressing, there are plenty of maple options to choose from! Parker Family Maple Farm in West Chazy, The Orebed Sugar Shack in De Kalb Junction, and Mark Twain Maple Works in Saranac Lake are just a few of the maple producers in the North Country.

Hiking

With unlimited mountains and walking paths throughout the region, get outside and explore. From beginner or family hikes to more challenging trails, there is something for all levels of hikers. As an added bonus, try a waterfall hike — be sure to stay on marked trails and watch for increased waterflow as it is prime snow melting season. Let the fresh spring air re-energize you!

Exploring New Towns

Drive to a nearby town to walk along Main Street, grab a bite to eat from a local restaurant you haven't tried yet, or enjoy a cup of coffee from a new spot. Embrace a change of scenery even if it is only miles away from where you live. From Potsdam and Canton to Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake, discover something new in the North Country.

Birding

Although the North Country is home to a wide variety of bird species throughout the year, the spring season offers a particularly unique mix of birds. You'll hear them chirping as the weather begins to warm up slowly and more birds return to the region from the south. Check out one of the Audubon New York Important Bird Areas (IBAs), such as the Lower St. Lawrence River and Chazy Landing/Kings Bay Area.

No matter what you choose to do, find the beauty in a close-to-home adventure. Share your favorite places to visit in the North Country this spring with us on Facebook!
