What We're Looking Forward to This Summer in the North Country

Celebrate sunny days and warmer nights by exploring close to home in the North Country this summer. Whether you're browsing the vendor booths at a local farmers' market, hiking along tree-lined trails, or hitting the perfect shot on the green, get ready for an unforgettable season. How will you spend your summer in the North Country?

Paddling

Dip your paddle into one of the many streams, rivers, ponds, or lakes in the North Country. From Upper St. Regis Lake and Grasse River to Raquette River and Saranac River, there are plenty of places to choose from! Be sure to research your chosen paddling spot so you know the difficulty level and where to launch your kayak or canoe. Always wear a personal flotation device when paddling, too. As you're paddling, be on the lookout for wildlife, such as birds and deer.

Swimming

Stop for a swim along a paddling excursion, or make swimming your main activity for the day. Feel the sand between your toes at the beach, or cannonball into the lake from a boat — both options are perfect for family or friends' trips alike. Cranberry Lake or Lake Champlain are just two of the swimming spots in northern New York.

Farmers' Markets

Find fresh produce and locally made goods at one of the many farmers' markets in the North Country. Honey, baked goods, fruits, vegetables, meats, and eggs are a few of the items you can purchase from local vendors! Canton, Potsdam, Saranac Lake, Malone, Ogdensburg, and Plattsburgh are some of the locations that host farmers' markets from approximately May to October.

Golfing

No matter what level golfer you are, hit the links in northern New York. From PGA Championship golf courses to more relaxed courses, there are options for everyone. Sign up for a tournament, play a scramble, or go on a casual outing with a few friends!

Hiking

Being surrounded by wide-open fields and vast mountains make the North Country an ideal setting for hiking. With family-friendly paths and trails for expert hikers, there is a hiking experience for all ages and levels. Whether you're exploring Point Au Roche State Park in Plattsburgh, walking along the Remington Recreational Trail in Canton, or chasing waterfalls at High Falls Park in Chateaugay, head outside and connect with nature. As always, be sure to follow the Leave No Trace principles — carry out what you carry in and wear the proper gear.
